The concept of the 10,000 hours was so simple, yet so profound.

I've been thrown in the deep end at work lately, it's not the best way to retain anyone...

here's to summer coming soon? The Writers Canvas, Author Elaine Callowayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05876278015231782761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6635035793625590468.post-72439674421623400562009-02-27T06:05:00.000-08:002009-02-27T06:05:00.000-08:00That is one problem with the seniority system as i...That is one problem with the seniority system as it now "works" in schools. The teachers who have the experience to work with the more challenging students feel they have earned the right not to have to do so. And the cycle of baptism by fire perpetuates.Art Belliveauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00869229920071975552noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6635035793625590468.post-67884487293926192472009-02-26T19:17:00.000-08:002009-02-26T19:17:00.000-08:00Hi, I came across your blog and feel the need to c...Hi, I came across your blog and feel the need to comment on this post. I am currently a 4th grade teacher and this is my 3rd year in a school district, 2nd full year teaching. I agree that teachers should get a year long internship to learn more about their role in the classroom. I also think that schools see a new teacher as an opportunity to dump some of the hard students so the other veteran teachers could get a break for a year, that's not fair to us newbies! It also has to do with the amount of requirements teachers in general have. That mixed with the teachers salary is enough to send people running. I'll admit, If I didn't have a great year (so far) I would be done at the end of this year because of the year I had last year.

I look forward to reading more of your postings.Nicolasahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08495066241131551069noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6635035793625590468.post-67461336415016080312009-02-26T08:26:00.000-08:002009-02-26T08:26:00.000-08:00You make some really excellent points here. I had spent a lot of time around kids prior to my first job out of college, but to have been given the opportunity to intern and be mentored would have made a big difference. I was one of those "burned out" teachers who became a mental health social worker for five years before getting back into the field as a reading tutor. It's hard enough to figure out who you are as a person after college, but to add on to it managing a classroom, taming the paperwork beast, and teaching so kids can learn important skills...People wonder why teachers get "so much" time off--we need it to simply cope with all of that responsibility!Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05773019825261781890noreply@blogger.com
